From its engaging story, unique premise, and stellar world-building the original Disco Elysium received acclaim unknown to an indie dev. At the very least, as "good" as a cop who spent three nights, depressed-drinking can get. There are instances where the player can give into their hedonism or try their hardest to be a "good" cop. While answering boldly won't completely result in an unwinnable situation, it can make simple solutions problematic. There isn't a "right" way to play the game but it seems like there are many wrong ways to go about your journey. With the release of Disco Elysium, ZA/UM attempted to bring back the insanity that players could achieve in the genre's heyday. From going into space without a spacesuit to touching a button the player wasn't supposed to, the joy was finding out the extent of what the game allowed you to do. This freedom wasn't without consequence, as some of gaming's infamous scenes resulted from poor decisions. Developers like Sierra Entertainment and Lucas Arts thrived on games that allowed players to have freedom of choice.
